Sagebrook’s healthcare practice is headed up by Managing Partner Bernard Plishtin. Prior to co-founding Sagebrook, Bernie’s relevant industry work included:

  • Management consulting at Bain & Company as case team leader in Bain’s healthcare practice. Bernie managed a series of cardiac surgery taskforces at hospitals and managed cost reduction programs as well as strategy engagements on product line portfolios, pricing and marketing.
  • As CEO of OmniMedia Systems, a developer and marketer of software/hardware solutions for physical therapy clinics, delivering customized therapy workout programs for their patients.
  • As VP Business Development for Canyon Ranch, establishing and managing a series of joint ventures and partnerships including a development unit that created a Web 2.0 application for delivering individualized wellness content and tracking tools for Canyon Ranch and JV partner Cleveland Clinic.
  • As Senior Consultant to Hearst Corporation’s digital media group, with focus on acquisitions & integration of online health companies into Hearst Digital.

Technology

The firm’s technology practice has been built by Bernard Plishtin and Arnold Brandyberry.

  • Bernie was General Manager of technology developer Ridefilm Corporation through its acquisition by IMAX and then ran Ridefilm as a subsidiary of IMAX through its IPO.
  • He was also President & CEO of venture-backed software company HotRoof, Inc. a provider of streaming video technology to large content companies (The New York, Times, Primedia) on an application service provider (ASP) basis.
  • Arnie co-founded Sagebrook with over 25 years of experience as a senior executive and investment professional in technology sectors such as microelectronics, semiconductor, optics, nanotechnology, life sciences, fuel cells and photonics.
  • For more than seven years, Arnie was Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer at Connecticut Innovations, the state of Connecticut’s investor in emerging technology companies and a national model for public investment in the health care and technology sectors.
  • Arnie was President and CEO for 9 years of Berkshire Corporation, a privately held international manufacturing corporation in the microelectronics, semi-conductor, and optics markets.

Life Sciences

Owen Dempsey has the experience behind Sagebrook’s life sciences practice.

  • Owen has run private and public companies ranging in size from start-ups to global businesses with multiple divisions. He is experienced with all stages of private financings, NASDAQ and foreign listings and the M&A process. Owen is the founder of Riverbend Consulting, and provided interim management services as acting CEO for cleantech developer NanoPaper, LLC.
  • Between 2003-2007, Owen assembled an award winning team as CEO of SRU Biosystems, a nanotech instrument company. In 1999, Owen was asked to participate in the formation of Perbio Science AB, a provider of life science discovery tools, which he helped lead to over $230 million in revenue before its acquisition by Fisher Scientific in 2003. From 1990 to 1999, he was a Co-founder & CEO at Endogen, Inc., a life science supplier company.
  • Owen also served as a board member of ALSSA, the Analytical and Life Science Systems Association from 2003 to 2008. Owen is currently a Director at Active Motif.

Advanced Materials

Expertise in advanced materials is with Owen Dempsey and Arnold Brandyberry.

  • Owen was acting CEO of American Aerogel Corporation, a leading advanced material aerogel company with strong IP, manufacturing and distribution capabilities. He spearheaded a $10MM Series B venture round with new and existing investors to triple manufacturing capacity, and reorganized American Aerogel’s marketing and management teams for strategic growth.
  • Arnie ran international mergers and acquisitions and had P&L responsibility for the non-woven industrial division of Dexter Corporation, a Fortune 500 company producing specialty chemicals and materials.
