Founder & Senior Advisor
Bernie is a business executive with deep transaction, operating and consulting experience in healthcare, technology and digital media. Prior to co-founding Sagebrook Partners in 2009, he led teams within established companies and built or advised many early stage organizations, with a range of experience in business development, M&A and strategic partnering/strategic investment. In early 2014, Bernie accepted a full-time position as Chief Business Development Officer at one of Sagebrook’s long-term clients, Oxford Performance Materials, Inc., a leader in the growing field of 3D printing/additive manufacturing with a focus in biomedical, aerospace and industrial applications.
Funding and Operations Management
Bernie has an extensive background in capital formation and growth. He was General Manager of technology developer Ridefilm Corporation through its acquisition by IMAX Corporation, then ran Ridefilm’s P&L as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Bernie became Vice President at IMAX through the company’s IPO in 1994. He was then hired as President & CEO of venture-backed HotRoof, Inc., an award-winning developer of streaming video technology and ASP to large content companies. In his five years as CEO of HotRoof (1997-2002), Bernie engineered the company’s “A” and “B” rounds of equity financing and headed-up business development and establishing primary strategic partnerships.
Larger Organizations: Consulting & Business Development
At Bain & Company (1987-1990), Bernie was case team leader of the consulting firm’s Corporate Healthcare Group in Boston, working with hospitals on operating efficiencies; he also performed Fortune 100 client work in M&A and product line strategy while at Bain. As VP, Business Development at Canyon Ranch (2003-2008), Bernie established & managed joint ventures and partnerships, including managing a series of JVs with the Cleveland Clinic and running a jointly-funded digital media unit for delivering individualized health and lifestyle content and tracking tools. Bernie was then hired as Senior Consultant to Hearst Corporation’s Digital Media Group (2008-2009), with focus on acquisitions & investments for Hearst’s online health area.
Education and Real Life
Bernie graduated the University of Pennsylvania with his B.A. (cum laude, dual degree in History and Political Science) and earned his MBA from the Yale School of Management (Finance, Marketing). At Yale, he was named the 1986 D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles Marketing Fellow. Bernie’s non-work life is shared with his wife (a “recovering MBA” getting her MFA in creative writing and teaching), a daughter in college, and a son in high school. Bernie is active in soccer, tennis, hiking and skiing.
